Sustainability

Our sustainability commitment

By taking small, sustainable steps along our end-to-end supply chain including our products, processes and packaging, we aim to minimize the impact on ecosystems from which our ingredients are sourced. We are committed to continuing to minimize our ecological footprint and are continuing to progress our packaging and ingredients’ sustainability ambitions, as well as maintaining our carbon neutral status. We share an alignment with our customers to drive a sustainable approach to business and to develop practices across packaging innovation trends to minimize the impact of our collective carbon footprint related to our operations.  We are continuing to review our targets on sustainable packaging and ingredients, water stewardship, and waste.

Our sustainability focus areas

To realize our commitment, we are focused on 3 core workstreams:

1.Increase efficiencies in energy, waste and water: We aim to use 100% of renewable energy, 0% waste to landfill and use water responsibly by 2030.

2. Maintain Carbon neutral status through reducing and offsetting our residual carbon footprint1.

3.Invest in sustainable packaging and ingredients: We aim to use 100% FSC or PEFC wood-based packaging and 100% ingredients from sustainable sources by 2030 and ensure our consumer packaging is > 75% recyclable.

All 3 workstreams will align with the relevant United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Specifically, our goals across our workstreams are aligned with 5 of UN SDGs namely: 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water) and15 (Life on Land).

1. In 2021 Nelsons met all Carbon Neutral Britain Certification standards in measuring, calculating and carbon offsetting all organizational carbon emissions within the Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions boundary during the period of 1st January 2020 to the 31st December 2020. Calculations were made following the ISO 14064-1:2018 and GHG Protocol Emissions Standards. Carbon Credits Issued were issued from one or more of the International Carbon Offsetting standards.

Community

Our community commitment

We have a long tradition of supporting international charitable partners and donate an amount of our profits every year to make a positive impact to the world outside of Nelsons. Tied to our mission of inspiring generations to live healthier, happier lives, we support a number of international health, well-being, and community charities through both corporate and brand partnerships.  Our people are passionate about their work and the communities around us. They are at the heart of what we do; therefore, we are committed to ensuring that they help shape our business within a diverse, equitable and inclusive working environment as well as providing opportunities to engage in volunteering initiatives. Our employee volunteering strategy was launched in 2022 to give our employees time to make a difference in the world, having a direct and positive impact in their community.

Our community focus areas

To realize our commitment, we work across 3 core areas:

  1. Charitable Partnerships, including:
    • The Passage: Nelsons has donated for many years to support the refuge and treatment of street sleepers in the borough of Westminster including providing a homeopathy service, both in house and home visits for the charity’s more vulnerable clients.
    • College of Medicine: Nelsons supports the College’s work as the only nationally recognized body covering the whole complementary field and have also participated in several webinars educating its members on the benefits of our Bach Original Flower Essences.
  2. People:
    • Nelsons’ people are at the heart of our business and we are committed to creating an environment where every individual can flourish. Our global engagement surveys, communications framework, and town hall meetings help us to cultivate employee engagement, encouraging active dialogue and transparency with our employees. Nelsons is committed to inspiring, nurturing and sustaining a culture of belonging, where diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) are embedded throughout all we do.  2022 saw us continue to embrace DE&I at Nelsons, through celebrating key initiatives globally, ensuring we are driving the inclusive experience at Nelsons that everyone deserves.
    • We have a diverse workforce of 21 nationalities, spread across our locations in Europe (UK, France, Germany) and America, and a 53% female workforce. Some of our employees work in our manufacturing sites, some are based in offices or at home, and others work directly with our customers.
    • We have a fair remuneration program to drive the right behaviors in line with Nelsons’ values. Nelsons is proud to continue to participate in the Real Living Wage and London Living Wage campaigns.
  3. Fair business practices & ethical sourcing:
    • Where we enter contractual relationships with 3rd parties, we embrace fair negotiations and always strive to ensure parity in the parties’ agreed terms.
    • We are continuing to work with our suppliers on completion of our ethical sourcing questionnaire to ensure they fully embrace standards of behavior we expect.
