Baby Teething Symptoms

Some children get cranky and irritable when they're teething, others may dribble and drool, but the only sure way to know if your child is teething is to examine their gums. You may be able to see or feel a new tooth emerging.

Mild baby teething symptoms to look out for before your baby's first tooth arrives may including some symptoms** such as:

  • Sore and tender gums.
  • Teething pain and discomfort.
  • Biting, gum rubbing and sucking or more dribbling than usual, which can result in teething rash.
  • Flushed cheeks and ear rubbing.
  • Irritability which can lead to poor appetite and a disturbed sleep.

Consult a doctor or qualified healthcare practitioner if you are concern about any of the symptoms.

Teething Tips

When your baby is teething, lots of cuddles and distractions can offer comfort. Try gently rubbing their gums with a clean finger or allowing them to bite on a clean, cool (not frozen) object, such as a chilled teething ring. If your baby is weaned, you can offer chilled fruits or vegetables, like cucumber or carrot, for them to bite on—just be sure to supervise at all times. The NHS recommends that you start brushing your baby's teeth as soon as they begin to emerge, using a baby toothbrush with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste*.

Don’t worry if you can’t brush much at first; the goal is to make brushing part of your baby’s daily routine. If your baby doesn’t enjoy it, keep trying—turn it into a game or brush your own teeth at the same time to set a good example. It's also a good idea to register your child with a dentist as their first teeth come through, as NHS dental treatment for children is free. Avoid sugary foods, which can contribute to tooth decay, and keep in mind that sugars found naturally in whole fruit and milk are less likely to cause harm. Finally, always have Teetha® Teething Gel on hand in your nappy bag to soothe your little one when needed.
